During the 19th and 20th centuries, Freeman Fox and Partners and John Taylor & Sons built international reputations in the respective fields of bridges and highways and water and wastewater. Collectively, they were responsible for the design of projects such as the Victoria Falls Bridge, Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Humber Bridge, the Severn Bridge, the Shanghai water supply project and major water and sewerage projects in Leningrad (now St Petersburg) and Tehran. These two firms merged in 1988 to form Acer Consultants. Over the next few years, the expertise of many other specialist firms was incorporated to form a major worldwide infrastructure consultancy.

The company was acquired by Welsh Water in 1993 and renamed as Hyder Consulting in 1996. Over the following years, Hyder Consulting spearheaded Hyder plc's move into providing total infrastructure solutions including advice, finance, design and operation. When Hyder plc was bought by Western Power Distribution, the senior management of Hyder Consulting took the opportunity to acquire the business in a management buy-out completed in January 2001. The company listed on the London Stock Exchange in October 2002.

The reputation for delivering 'landmark' projects, developed from the company's early origins, has continued throughout the years. More recent examples include the Melbourne City Link, the Emirates Twin Towers in Dubai and the Cairo Wastewater Project.
