Andy Davids gives keynote speech at 3rd Annual Ultra-High Rise Building Summit in Shanghai
Andy Davids, Director of Structures at Hyder Middle East, gave the keynote address, "Postcard from the Middle East – Lessons from the Design and Construction of the Tallest Buildings on Earth’’ at the recent 3rd Annual Ultra-High Rise Building Summit in Shanghai.
Dr Davids's speech covered the natural, commercial and cultural forces at work in the sculpturing of very tall buildings in the Middle East. Hyder is currently responsible for eight mixed-use towers under design and/or construction in the Middle East and with each of these projects at over 80 levels, they provided topical examples from which Andy could illustrate the observations of the keynote address.
Dr. Davids concluded by sharing some thoughts on the next generation of ultra-tall buildings, embodied in the 1,000 - 2,000m tall Energy Tower concept, proposed by Hyder to meet a specific client brief. The unique characteristic of this project is a large diameter central tube which allows cool air from high altitude to be drawn down to ground level and run through turbines to generate sufficient energy to power the daily needs of the building. The construction concepts, atmospheric physics and architectural expression of the concept were all very well received by the delegates, and the keynote generated considerable discussion at the conference.
