Safer and sustainable fishing in Newlyn
Newlyn Harbour now has a safe working environment and a sustainable income generating facility. Additionally, this project won the 2006 UK Brownfield Briefing Innovation Award for best use of a chemical treatment process.
Hyder Consulting was commissioned to produce contract documents and supervision for the construction of a series of small boat pontoons in Newlyn Harbour. Up to this point, the small boat fleet had berthed alongside larger vessels and often rafted up in groups which posed significant health and safety problems.
The new pontoons aimed to help sustain the fishing community by creating a separate berthing facility for the small boats and improved man access to the various vessels.
Hyder managed the whole project on behalf of Newlyn Pier and Harbour Commissioners and the work specifically involved:
• Dredging in organic tin compounds (TBT) contaminated silts to achieve a future bed level of –2.0mCD.
• Treatment of TBT contaminated silts for beneficial use.
• Fabrication and installation of pontoons creating over 80 new births.
• Installation of a piled anchoring system to hold the pontoons.
• Fabrication and installation of a linkspan bridge between the pontoons and the shore.
• Installation of a bankseat to support and restrain the linkspan.
• Relocation of an active RNLI berth.
• Installation of all required services and CCTV.
• Hyder carried out significant liason with the regulatory bodies to make sure that the consents for the work were all in place.
