Hyder Consulting, scooped an impressive two awards at the British Expertise International Awards ceremony, held at the Institute of Directors, Pall Mall, London on 11th November after being shortlisted in five award categories.
Hyder's involvement on Burj Dubai won the Innovation of the Year Award. Emaar Properties initially commissioned Hyder to design the tower's foundations. Following the original design by SOM, Hyder's role expanded to 'Engineer, and Architect of Record' for the tower, 'Design Adoption Consultant' responsible for structural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) and facade services. Hyder's role also includes construction supervision for the overall tower.
As the world's tallest man-made structure, Burj Dubai forms the centrepiece of the most prestigious urban development in Dubai. With Dubai aiming to boost its tourism sector and promote the region as a global trade and business hub, the Downtown Burj Dubai development is becoming the most sought after residential locale.
Robert Baker - Highways and Infrastructure Function Manager based in Manila won the Award Category for Young Consultant of the Year 2009/10. With an impressive career growth at just 29, he has excellent attributes as a rounded professional with real charisma and character - his achievements to date are outstanding for someone at this stage in his career.
Robert's vision to push the traditional boundaries of age, geography, culture and quality in the civil engineering industry has delivered technical excellence and competitive advantage. He was nominated as a graduate training officer with his first employer, at Hyder in the Middle East and latterly with Hyder in Manila. Robert is currently in the process of establishing an internal training programme for all graduate engineers who are rotating from Hyder's Middle East offices to Manila to ensure they obtain design experience and for graduate engineers from Manila to the Middle East to make sure they obtain construction supervision experience. One of the most rewarding aspects however has been his contribution to the organisation of aid relief to the recent flood disaster, which struck Manila and Northern Luzon in late September 2009. Working with Red Cross, Robert is actively developing opportunities, which will use his skills and those of his team to benefit society.
Ivor Catto, Chief Executive of Hyder Consulting commented: 'I am delighted that Hyder has won these two prestigious awards. Together they build on our strong design heritage and recognise the innovation of our people and delivery of excellence to our clients."
