4 January 2010 marked the official inauguration ceremony for the iconic Burj Khalifa. The captivating event coincided with the fourth anniversary of the accession to power by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
Subsequent to the original design by Chicago-based SOM (Skidmore, Owings & Merrill) LLP, Emaar Properties chose Hyder Consulting for its structural and MEP engineering capability to meet the demands, complexity and enormity of design adoption and construction supervision for the world’s tallest building.
Under UAE law, the Contractor and the Engineer of Record are jointly and severally liable for the performance of Burj Khalifa.
Therefore, by adoption of SOM’s design and by being appointed as the Engineer and Architect of Record, Hyder Consulting is legally the Design Consultant for the tower.
In this role, Hyder worked closely with the contractor joint venture Samsung-Besix-Arabtec to overcome the many construction and logistical challenges faced at various stages of the project, reengineered structural, façades and MEP systems to suit the contractor’s and local authority requirements, and provided
construction supervision for this historic endeavor. The company’s role also included the Downtown Burj Dubai development infrastructure, masterplanning, design and construction supervision services, as well as the structural and MEP design of The Dubai Fountain and lake, the world’s tallest performing fountain.
Hyder Consulting has earned itself a reputation for its unrivalled engineering ability on the Burj Khalifa, a defining project and one that ranks alongside the company’s vast range of historical projects including Crystal Palace, London; Tower Bridge, London; Harbour Bridge, Sydney; and Emirates Towers, Dubai.
Today, Hyder is at the forefront of industry with over 150 years of achievements of civil engineering feats; add to this the pride of having been involved in constructing something truly amazing, and this makes Burj Khalifa the most inspirational success story of the decade.
There are currently five completed tallest buildings in the world, which soar above 100 storeys and Hyder is involved with the design and construction of four of the future tallest buildings in the world currently under construction. These include; Burj Khalifa and Pentominium Tower in United Arab Emirates, and Al Quds
Tower and Doha Convention Centre and Tower in Qatar.”
There is little doubt that Burj Khalifa is an iconic, unique and innovative building for the 21st Century and an amazing number of “world firsts” can be justly attributed to both its design and construction. The building represents engineering application at its finest and Hyder Consulting is very proud to add this project to its heritage of world-class construction feats.
