Innovation on A40 Western Avenue bridges

The A40 scheme has been shortlisted in the category of civil engineering project of £3-£50m and for the prestigious Prime Minister's Better Public Building Award.

At first glance the project appears simple: replace two substandard bridges over railway lines.  The challenge was to do so without interrupting essential services, road traffic on one of London’s busiest commuter routes, and services on three important railway lines. The constraints ruled out the typical methodology of offline construction followed by installation during weekend or Christmas possessions. Hyder’s innovative solutions developed enabled the work to be carried out with an excellent safety record within agreed timescales and budgets and with minimal disruption to the public.

Facilitating regeneration at South Milton Sands

This project has been shortlisted for the award for small civils project up to £3m. Working for the National Trust, this project’s aim was to reinstate a sustainable sand dune system at South Milton Sands in Devon to allow coastal realignment to happen naturally. Hyder's approach increased re-use of materials in a sustainable manner and engaged with community groups and other stakeholders and is thus is a fine example of how coastal realignment projects can be undertaken successfully in sensitive sites.
